Baked Alaska

Yes, the name is a little strange but this has got to be the ultimate old fashioned dessert of all times! Also known as Norwegian Omelette, this is a sinful dessert made up of a sponge cake, ice cream and meringue.

This is also a difficult dessert that requires a little bit of cooking knowledge and skill.

It can be described as ice cream sandwiched between two layers of sponge cake and topped with meringue! It is then placed in a hot oven for the meringue to brown. Yes, u read it correctly, hot oven!
The meringue acts as an insulation and prevents the ice cream from melting.

It is an elegant and majestic dessert loved by all and is great to serve at the end of a feast! It will surely leave your guests asking for more!
Here is the recipe

Ingredients

Sponge Cake: See Swiss Roll for recipe of Sponge Cake
Ice cream: any flavour
Sugar Syrup
For the Meringue:
White of 4 Eggs
Lemon Essence

Method:

Set your oven to the maximum temperature and preheat while you assemble the dessert.
Beat egg whites till stiff and add a few drops of lemon essence.
Place a sheet of sponge cake in an ovenproof dish and soak with sugar syrup.
Put ice cream on the cake and cover with the another sheet of sponge cake.
Soak the cake with more sugar syrup.
Now cover the cake with meringue taking care not to leave any part uncovered.
You can use a piping bag to decorate the cake with the meringue.
Now place the meringue covered, ice cream filled cake in the hot oven for 1-2 minutes till the meringue turns slightly brown.
Do not keep it in the oven for too long as meringue burns very easily.

Serve immediately! Enjoy!
